A gentle reminder.
Not everyone have the gift of tongues.
1 Cor 12:29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing?
So if someone claims that tongues is a sure sign of someone who is filled with the Spirit is not teaching from the word but from their own understanding.
Speaking in tongues shows that someone has receive the gift of tongues which also implies that the Spirit is with them but having the Spirit does not implies the gift of tongues
How gift of tongues is received.
It is a gift, God give it. It is not forced upon; neither will everyone get it just because they desire it. There is a certain group of people who practice repetition of words as a way to acquire the ‘gift of tongues’. There is no basis for such practice; it is psychological and manipulative. Some may claim that it helps in the process, but then again, it is a gift from God, He doesn’t need help. Observe how people receive this gift in the bible (it just came upon them).
Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
It is in control, not auto and not with a possessed-like state.
1 Cor 14:27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.
It is possible for it to be contained, it can wait. If it is an uncontrollable thing, this command wouldn’t be given.
Purpose of the gift of tongues?
1 Cor 14:6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church. 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret.
It is for the edification of the body but without interpretation, no one will be edified. That is why Paul says that someone who has the gift of tongues should also pray for the gift of interpretation.
*A note on gift of interpretation, it a gift to interpret, not make guesses and assumptions or other imaginary stuff that someone ‘feels’.
How should it be exercise in a group.
1 Cor 14:27 If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets
Paul says that the gift of tongues is to be used for the edification of the body when Christians gather. Thus it should be done in an orderly manner. This applies to prophecy also. In fact, the practice of everyone whacking in genuine gift of tongues were practiced in the church of Corinth those days and Paul have to sound them through this letter.
Myth:
Some may want to quote Romans 8:26 in defense, well...
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
But then again, it is the Spirit who is interceding for us. Not us, so it does not apply to the gift of tongues.
F.Y.I, Jesus intercedes for us too. (Heb 7:25)
Plausible: Tongues of angels.
1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
As you can see, Paul is writing in metaphor. The existence of an angelic language is not known. Paul is saying, ‘if’. Compare with ‘if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains’, Paul is not claiming that he has faith that can move mountains, he is just saying that ‘even if’. Anyone who blindly insist that is it not metaphoric must also accept that someone who fails to love is a clanging cymbal or noisy gong, not human. I'm a drummer... I'll like you.
I changed my skin and now its acting funny. Really keep skin man.
Do we see the need to learn?
Why do we need to learn?
2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Matthew 4:4 But he answered, "It is written, "' Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
1 John 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Spiritual growth and maturity.
Where we seek our understanding?
Primary source: Bible.
Other resources that use the bible as their primary source.
x. Feelings, traditions, cultures, testimony.
Timothy 4:3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
1 Timothy 1:6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Who do we learn from?
John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Saying that we do not need to learn from anyone else apart from God is both a valid and invalid statement. The question do we want to / do not want to learn from others?
Consider, Ephesians 4:11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 2 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
And who is the one working in these people?
What do we need to learn?
Major doctrines.
Hebrews 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Common sense tells us to learn more on current issues and practices in our culture.
Equip yourself to minister to the people and situation around you.
How do we learn?
Enroll into classes.
Self study.
Ask yourself questions as you read, seek understanding.
Put into practice.
Ask questions, examine, test… etc.
Attitude of love. (1 timothy 1:5)
When will we start learning?
Example,
Topic: Slain in the spirit.
1. State what you understand.
2. State the common defense.
3. Examine the validity of the defenses.
4. Ask yourself questions.
a) If it is the presence of God that causes someone to fall to the ground, can God’s presence be resisted?
b) How much of God’s manifested presence is required? Is the presence of God in us enough?
c) When someone comes out from the slain mode, why?
d) Will God cause someone to fall to the ground and get physically wounded? If yes, is the act from God? If no, why do we need someone to catch?
e) What is the significance of being slain? What is the work that God does that He wouldn’t when compared to someone who is not slain?
f) Where is the bible that supports (i) the principles behind this event and (ii) significance of it? Does this tally with (e)?
5. Conclude.
*What if someone conclude with,
It doesn’t matter are long as it creates unity.
